Stitch for those in need

27/08/2008 5:09:00 PM
Ladies from the Inner Wheel Club, Scone Inc gathered together on Tuesday to have a “Stitch in Day.”

In 2007, the ladies of Inner Wheel Scone began knitting squares to support the Wrap with Love Program.

The Wrap with Love Program, which has been enthusiastically promoted and supported by ABC Radio, collects wraps which have been made from knitted squares for national and international distribution to those in need. In 2006, 22,737 wraps were distributed to 21 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and Australia. Rugs are given to National and International aid agencies including World Vision Gifts in Kind, Crossroads International, Christian Missions International for distribution.

A wrap can provide the necessary warmth to keep a person from freezing to death.

Inner Wheel President, Mary Woodlands said last year the group started knitting squares which were sent to Sydney to be made into wraps by volunteers.

This year they have knitted such a large number of squares, over 300, they thought it would be great to have a “stitch in” day to sew the squares together and make completed wraps. Twenty eight squares are needed to make one wrap and the ladies will complete about 11 wraps.

“It has been a wonderful and worthwhile project,” Mrs Woodlands said.

If you would like to knit squares for this project or become an Inner Wheel member, please contact Mary Woodlands on 6545 2189 or Elizabeth Wills on 6546 8039.
